Live Edge Dining Table

A single slab of guanacaste, a Central American hardwood with rich golden-brown color and bold grain. The natural edge is left as the tree grew it, so no two tables are alike.

Wood
Guanacaste, live edge
Base
Oiled bronze strap
Size
108″ L × 36–46″ W × 30.25″ H
Seats
8, or 10 with a chair at each end

Width varies from 36 to 46 inches along the natural edge.

Set a table people linger at

  • Give every guest 24 inches. That is the elbow room for a comfortable meal. At 108 inches long, this table seats eight with space to pass the platters.
  • Leave 36 inches behind each chair. Guests need that much to pull out a chair and sit down. Where people walk behind seated guests, aim for 42 to 48 inches.
  • Keep centerpieces under 14 inches. Low greenery and candles let everyone see across the table. Save tall arrangements for the sideboard.
  • Hang the chandelier 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop. Then dim it and let candles do the rest.
  • Let beautiful wood show. On a live edge top, skip the full tablecloth. Use a linen runner or bare wood with placemats.
  • Serve from the sideboard. Buffet-style keeps the table clear for conversation, and casual serving is how most people are hosting this year. See the Monterey Credenza.

Cadence Round Dining Table

A round table puts everyone in one conversation, with no head of the table and no one stuck at the far end. The Cadence looks simple at first, then the details show: a thick rounded edge, oak veneer in a reverse diamond pattern, and brass that runs right through the legs.

Size
64″ round
Seats
6 comfortably, 8 for a cozy family dinner
Top
Narrow heart oak veneer in a reverse diamond pattern, thick rounded edge
Base
Four large oak columns, antique brass X stretcher with brass knob caps

Hosting tipPlan on a room about 11 feet square, which leaves 36 inches around the table for chairs. Put the dishes on a lazy Susan in the center so everything is within everyone's reach.

A refined take on a minimal form. A slender metal handle sits atop the sculpted back, and casters make it easy to pull out and push in, which matters when the table is full.

Hosting tipAt 23 inches wide, it fits the 24-inches-per-guest rule, so eight sit comfortably along the Live Edge Dining Table. Use upholstered side chairs along the sides and a pair of host chairs at the ends.

The Entry

Make arriving easy

  • Give coats a home before the doorbell rings. Clear a closet, or set out a rack or bench so jackets don't pile on a bed.
Put a lamp on in the entry. Warm light at the door sets the tone before anyone sees the table.

Add a landing spot. A console with a tray or bowl catches keys, phones and the bottle of wine someone brought.

Place a mirror by the door. Guests appreciate a last glance, and it bounces light into a small space.

After dinner

The Living Room

Arrange for conversation

  • Pull seating closer. Chairs and sofas within about eight feet of each other keep one conversation going instead of three.
  • Put a surface within reach of every seat. Side tables and nesting tables mean no one is holding a plate on their knee.
  • Layer your lighting. Turn the overheads down and the table lamps on. Three or four pools of light make a room feel warm.
  • Leave throws within reach. They are practical on a chilly evening and soften the look of the room.
Add extra seats that move. A swivel chair turns toward whoever is talking, so one chair works for two conversations. Round ottomans that tuck under the cocktail table add seats that disappear when the party is over.

The Guest Room

Think like a good hotel

  • Empty a drawer and a few hangers. Guests settle in faster when they can unpack.
  • Leave the small comforts out. An extra blanket, a water carafe, a phone charger and the Wi-Fi password on a card.
  • Sleep in it one night. You'll notice the draft, the squeaky drawer or the missing reading light before your guests do.
Light on both sides of the bed. A nightstand and a lamp for each sleeper, so no one gets up in the dark.

Give the suitcase a place. A bench at the foot of the bed keeps bags off the floor. Choose one that opens, and the extra pillows and blankets live right where guests will look for them.
