Patterns – Don’t Be Afraid to Mix & Match!

Stripes, plaids, polka dots, and florals, no matter what the pattern is, trying to mix and match them can be a daunting task. For the longest, style experts – in both fashion and interior design – have told us to avoid using different prints together but that time has come to an end!

Mix, Match, and be Merry!!!

Okay, so now that we are all on the same page and ready to use different patterns, we need to figure out the best way to do so! Believe it or not, there are right ways to combine the prints to achieve a gorgeous room. Whether you want to be bold and have one pattern really stand out and draw all the attention or if you want to go a more subtle route, we’ve got the tips and tricks on how to achieve a chic look.

Here are a few tips to follow when bringing in patterns to jazz your home up!

Stick to the same tones. Let the difference in patterns be what pops. Mixing different patterns and tones of colors will give your room an un-cohesive look; you want the contrast to look purposeful.

Vary the scale of the patterns. Patterns come in different sizes, whether you are talking florals or stripes, you want to make sure the scales of patterns are not all the same, don’t use small prints only.

Pick 3 or more prints. A general rule of thumb when designing is to work with odd numbers. We want to make sure the contrast in patterns looks purposeful, and with just 2 patterns, it could look accidental.

Pay attention to balance. Where you place your patterned pieces matters. You want to make sure they are balanced throughout the room; otherwise, you will end up making the room feel too heavy on one side.

Remember it is all about family. You want your colors and the feel of the patterns to all be in the same family. Do not mix a print that has an extremely formal feel with a casual pattern. You always want to maintain a cohesive look.

No matter what your taste, from formal to whimsical, you can bring in multiple patterns to create a room that will leave your friends talking. Do not be afraid to experiment, just keep in mind our tips and tricks!
