“Kathy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always had a passion for interior design, in particular, textiles. I started out as a seamstress, even teaching sewing classes as a newlywed with 3 small children at home. I use to design and sew all my own window coverings, and pretty soon, neighbors and friends began to hire me to do the same for them. Making window coverings soon became designing rooms, including furnishings, rugs, and lighting. In 1991, I opened my own boutique, “Kathy Adams Interiors” in a small 1250 square foot space in a shopping center. By then, I was traveling to France and England and importing antiques, even designing pieces manufactured using antique wood. I quickly outgrew the original space, so I decided to build my own building on Preston Road. Although the brand is much larger now, the seed that started it all is the same: to design elegant, but comfortable spaces.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been struggles along the way, a lot stemming from competing with larger, more “corporate” companies. They made growing the business harder. But, we offer something very unique, a personal touch; our clients are more like our family and very loyal.”
